A slowdown in the eurozone economy or perhaps a recession will not be enough to control inflation, and the European Central Bank will have to keep raising interest rates, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos said in an interview with a Portuguese newspaper.
"A slowing economy will not be able to 'take care' of inflation on its own," the Expresso newspaper quoted de Guindos as saying Friday.
"A slowing economy will reduce pressure on demand, which will lead to lower inflation," he added. But at the same time, we have to act in terms of monetary policy to keep inflation expectations anchored and avoid a second-round effect. "
