Title: Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.28%

Australian shares rose after the close on Wednesday as gains in the energy, commodities, metals, and mining sectors led stocks higher.


At the close of trading in Sydney, the S & P/ASX 200 was up 0.28%.


Polynovo Ltd. was the best performer on the S & P/ASX 200, rising 7.27%, or 0.08 points, to close at 1.18. Santos Ltd gained 6.20%, or 0.45 points, to close at 7.71 and Woodside Petroleum Ltd rose 6.14%, or 1.76 points, to 30.44 in late trade.


Pointsbet Holdings Ltd was the worst performer, falling 11.75%, or 0.49 points, to close at 3.68. Janus Henderson Group PLC DRC fell 7.30%, or 3.40 points, to 43.20, while Magellan Financial Group Ltd fell 6.43%, or 1.14 points, to 16.60.


On the Sydney Stock Exchange, falling shares outweighed rising ones by 808 to 657, and 341 ended unchanged.


Woodside Petroleum Ltd shares reached a 52-week high, rising 6.14%, or 1.76 percent, to 30.44.


The VIX of the S& P/ASX 200, which measures the implied volatility of S& P/ASX 200 options, fell 0.99% to 16.80.


Gold futures for April delivery rose 0.12%, or 2.25, to $1,946.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodity trading, crude oil for April delivery rose 7.48%, or 7.73, to $111.14 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract gained 7.38%, or 7.75, to $112.72 a barrel.


The AUD/USD exchange rate was unchanged at 0.73, while the AUD/JPY exchange rate gained 0.34% to 83.57.


Futures on the US dollar index rose 0.15% to 97.55.
