Ignazio Visco, the head of Italy's central bank, told Bloomberg television on Friday that the European Central Bank may start raising interest rates, possibly as early as July, and gradually bring them back into positive territory.
"Inflation expectations are now around 2% and will probably stay there," Visco said. "Therefore, we can move and we can gradually raise interest rates in the coming months."
"Right now I think we can move out of that negative territory," Visco said, adding that a June rate hike is not out of the question, but "maybe July" could be a lift-off date.
