Japan's stocks gained after the close on Wednesday as gains in the shipbuilding, transportation, and insurance sectors drove stocks higher.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 1.64%.
Among the best performers on the Nikkei 225 were shares of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., which rose 8.38%, or 28.00 points, to close at 362.00. Softbank Group Corp. gained 5.96% or 254.00 points to end at 4,519.00 points, while Fujitsu Ltd. gained 5.40% or 895.00 points to 17,470.00 points in late trade.
In late trade, JGC Corp. was the worst performer, falling 3.17% or 50.00 points to close at 1,527.00 points in late trade. Comsys Holdings Corp fell 2.10% or 57.00 points to close at 2,659.00, while 2.48% or 33.00 points fell to close at 1,298.00.
On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, rising stocks outweighed falling ones by 2412 to 1122, and 242 ended unchanged.
The Nikkei Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, rose 1.33% to 28.98.
Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.73%, or 1.67, to $98.11 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodity trading, Brent oil for delivery in May rose 2.59%, or $2.59, to $102.50 a barrel, while the April gold futures contract fell 0.57%, or 11.00, to settle at $1,918.70 a troy ounce.
The USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 118.36, while the EUR/JPY gained 0.19% to 129.78.
Futures on the US dollar index fell 0.20% to 98.87.
