Title: Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.27%

Australian stocks rose after Tuesday's close, thanks to gains in the Energy, Resources and Metals and Mining sectors.


At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.27%.


The best performance of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 was Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX:LYC), which rose 6.56% or 0.58 points to 9.42 at the close. Meanwhile, Beach Energy Ltd (ASX:BPT) added 6.12% or 0.10 points to close at 1.74 and Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) rose 5.91% or 0.29 points to 5.20 at the close of trade.


The worst performers of the session were Brambles Ltd (ASX:BXB), which fell 7.59% or 0.88 points to stand at 10.72 at the close. Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX:PBH) fell 4.60% or 0.12 points to close at 2.49 and Rea Group Ltd (ASX:REA) fell 4.52% or 5.15 points to 108.72.


Rising stocks outnumbered falling stocks on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 782 to 642 and 371 closed unchanged.


Shares in Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) rose to three-year highs, up 5.91 per cent or 0.29 points to 5.20.


The VIX of the S&P/ASX 200, which measures the implied volatility of options on the S&P/ASX 200, fell 6.26% to 17.22.


Gold futures for June delivery rose 0.59%, or $10.62, to $1,824.62 a troy ounce. In other commodities trading, crude oil for July delivery rose 0.04% or 0.04 to reach $111.86 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.16 to reach $114.40 a barrel.


AUD/USD was unchanged at 0.63% at 0.70, while AUD/JPY rose 0.79% to 90.74.


US dollar index futures fell 0.18% to 104.01.
