Title: Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.56%

Australian shares rose after the close on Tuesday as gains in the energy, metals and mining, and gold sectors drove stocks higher.


At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.56%, hitting a new 3-month high.


The best performer in the S&P/ASX 200 was shares of Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd, which rose 5.88%, or 0.18 points, to close at 3.24. Omni Bridgeway Ltd. gained 4.08%, or 0.14 points, to close at 3.57, and Beach Energy Ltd. rose 4.06%, or 0.07 points, to 1.66 in late trading.


Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Ltd was the worst performer, falling 2.57% or 0.54 points to close at 20.44. Resolute Mining Ltd fell 2.53% or 0.01 points to close at 0.38, while St Barbara Ltd was down 2.29% or 0.04 points to close at 1.50.


On the Sydney Stock Exchange, rising shares outweighed falling ones by 797 to 671, and 405 ended unchanged.


Shares of Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd rose 5.88% or 0.18 to 3.24, hitting a new 5-year high. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Ltd shares fell to a 52-week low, dropping 2.57% or 0.54 to 20.44.


The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, rose 8.03% to 12.99.


AUD/USD was unchanged at 0.49%, rising to 0.74, while AUD/JPY rose 1.34% to 94.52.


US dollar index futures rose 0.05% to 100.82.
