Title: Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 1.11%

Japanese stocks rose after the close on Monday as gains in the energy, shipbuilding and mining sectors drove stocks higher.


At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 1.11%.


Among the best performers on the Nikkei 225 were shares of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd, which rose 4.87% or 48.00 points to close at 1,034.00 points. Meanwhile, Daiichi Sankyo Co, Ltd gained 4.44% or 153.00 points to close at 3,596.00 and Konami Corp (TYO:9766) rose 4.20% or 300.00 points to 7,440.00 in late trade.


Yaskawa Electric Corp was the worst performer, falling 5.61% or 255.00 points to close at 4,290.00 at the close of trading. Toray Industries, Inc. fell 5.12% or 38.30 points to close at 709.30 and Tokyo Electron Ltd. fell 1.38% or 600.00 points to 42,950.00.


On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, advancers outweighed decliners with 2817 to 752 and 212 ended unchanged.


Shares of Daiichi Sankyo Co, Ltd rose to a 52-week high, gaining 4.44% or 153.00 to 3,596.00.

The Nikkei Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, fell 0.09% to 22.41.


Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.89%, or 1.98, to $102.81 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodity trading, Brent oil for delivery in September fell 1.64%, or 1.75, to $105.27 a barrel, while the August gold futures contract fell 0.35%, or 6.10, to settle at $1,736.20 a troy ounce.


USD/JPY rose 0.54% to 136.82, while EUR/JPY fell 0.07% to 138.47.


US dollar index futures rose 0.46% to 107.32.
