Title: Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 1.27%

Japan's stocks gained after the close Friday as gains in the shipbuilding, transportation equipment, and mining sectors drove shares higher.


At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 1.27%.


Among the best performers on the Nikkei 225 were shares of Seiko Epson Corp., which rose 8.76%, or 171.00 points, to close at 2,123.00. 7.53% or 660.00 points to close at 9,430.00 points, while Japan Steel Works, Ltd. rose 7.50% or 230.00 points to 3,295.00 points in late trading.


Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd. was the worst performer, falling 2.75% or 73.00 points to close at 2,584.00 points in late trading. Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. fell 2.59% or 46.00 points to close at 1,731.00 and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Ltd. fell 2.57% or 13.00 points to 493.00.


On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, advancers outweighed decliners by 2469 to 1055, and 237 ended unchanged.


Shares of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. rose to a 5-year high, up 7.53% or 660.00 to 9,430.00, while shares of Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Ltd. fell to a 5-year low, down 2.59% or 46.00 to 1,731.00.


Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, fell 4.51% to 23.10.


USD/JPY increased by 0.18% to 128.04, while EUR/JPY increased by 0.09% to 135.41.


USD index futures rose 0.20% to 102.95.
