Title: Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 1.75%

Japanese stocks gained after the close on Thursday as gains in the gas, water, power, and maritime sectors drove stocks higher.


At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 1.75%.


Among the best performers on the Nikkei 225 were Fujikura Ltd., which gained 15.86% or 85.00 points to close at 621.00, Denso Corp., which gained 9.72% or 705.00 points to close at 7,957.00, and Tokuyama Corp. gained 7.44% or 120.00 points to close at 1,733.00 in late trading.


Konica Minolta, Inc. was the worst performer, falling 6.20% or 30.00 points to close at 454.00 points in late trading. Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. fell 4.83%, or 150.00 points, to close at 2,955.00, while Keisei Electric Railway Co., Ltd. fell 4.77%, or 160.00 points, to close at 3,195.00.


On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, rising stocks outweighed falling ones by 2505 to 1050, and 208 ended the trading session unchanged.


Shares of Konica Minolta, Inc. fell to a 52-week low, losing 6.20%, or 30.00 to 454.00.


Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, fell 2.88% to 26.61.


The price of crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.26%, or $0.27, to $101.75 per barrel. Elsewhere in commodity trading, Brent oil for July delivery fell 0.35%, or $0.37, to $104.58 a barrel, while June gold futures fell 0.17%, or $3.13, to settle at $1,885.57 a troy ounce.


At 130.32, USD/JPY rose 1.48% to 130.32, while EUR/JPY gained 1.32% to 137.34.


The US dollar index futures rose 0.28% to 103.25.
