Title: Japan stocks lower at close of trade; Nikkei 225 down 1.49%

Japanese shares dropped after the end of trading on Friday, as losses in the steel, energy and shipping sectors led stocks lower.


At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index was down 1.49%.


Within the Nikkei 225 index, Taiheiyo Cement Corp. was the best performing stock of the session, rising 6.77%, or 132.00 points, to close at 2,082.00 points.


Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co, Ltd rose 5.98% or 195.00 points to close trading at 3,455.00 points, while SKY Perfect JSAT Holdings Inc rose 3.51% or 17.00 points to close trading at 502.00 points.


The worst performer during the session was Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co, Ltd. which fell 4.76% or 560.00 points to close at 11,200.00 points. Advantest Corp. fell 4.20% or 360.00 points to close at 8,210.00 points and Kubota Corp (TYO:6326) fell 4.16% or 106.50 points to close at 2,452.00 points.


On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, declining stocks outnumbered rising stocks by a ratio of 2,858 to 707, and 198 stocks closed unchanged.


Shares of SKY Perfect JSAT Holdings Inc. rose to a 52-week high with a gain of 3.51% or 17.00 points to 502.00.


Nikkei volatility, which measures the implied volatility of options on the Nikkei 225, rose 4.01% to 20.22 points.


Crude oil for July delivery fell 0.67%, or 0.81, to $120.70 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent crude for August delivery fell 0.67% or 0.83 to close at $122.24 a barrel, while gold futures for August fell 0.20% or 3.70 to close at $1,849.10 a troy ounce.


The USD/JPY fell 0.66% to 133.45 points, while the EUR/JPY fell 0.46% to 141.93 points.

Futures on the US dollar index fell 0.12% to 103.09 points.
